Ford Mustang at Ford Lincoln of Huntington

The Ford Mustang was first introduced in 1965. The car is currently in its sixth generation. This is also the first generation to be sold globally, and the first time that both right-hand drive and left-hand drive models were produced.

Ford Mustang Generations

The First Generation: The first generation Mustang was in production from 1965-1973. To keep the price low, the vehicle was manufactured with simple components, most of which were being used in other Ford cars. Initial upgrades on some models included the addition of backup lights and the replacement of generators with alternators. The six-cylinder engine was also upgraded from 170 to 200 cubic inches, which boosted the horsepower from 101 to 120. The V8 engine was also upgraded from 260 to 289 cu in, which increased the horsepower from 164 to 210. From 1967 to 1973, although the Mustang grew in size, its power did not increase.

The Second Generation: From 1974-1978, the second generation Mustang was a big hit, largely due to its reduced size, which allowed it more fuel efficiency. Engine options for this generation included a 2.3 L I-4 and a 2.8 L Cologne V6. The 1975 version saw a return of the 4.9 L Windsor V8. The Mustang was available in hatchback and coupé versions. All the Mustangs in the second generation featured frameless door glass. The luxury Ghia model also featured a vinyl roof that was padded and small rear quester windows. The Mach 1 remained consistent throughout this generation while the other models were slightly modified.

The Third Generation: Ford produced the third generation Mustang from 1979-1993. This model was introduced on a longer platform to make room for up to four people. It also had a larger trunk capacity. The two available trim levels were the base model and the more luxuriant Ghia. Convertible, hatchback and coupé body styles were available. Change throughout this generation included redesigned front end styles, chrome door handles, air dam with fog lights, and full-length head scoop. Engine options for 1979-1982 models included the 88 horsepower 2.3, the German-made 109 horsepower 2.8 L Cologne V6, and the 140 horsepower 4.9 L Windsor V8.

The Fourth Generation: The fourth generation Mustang debuted in 1994 and ran until 2004, and it marked the car's first major redesign in over a decade. The basic model had a choice of either a 145 horsepower or a 150 horsepower 3.8 OHV V6 engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, or a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 1999, the Mustang was redesigned with the New Edge styling, which had larger wheel arches, sharper contours and bodywork creases. The interior design and basic proportions remained the same.

The Fifth Generation: Ford introduced the fifth generation Mustang from 2005- 2014. The base model was powered by a 210 horsepower 4.0 L SOHC V6 engine, while the GT model had a 300 horsepower 4.0 L SOHC V6 engine. The 2010 Mustang was introduced with an exterior facelift featuring sequential LED taillights. The base engine remained the same, but the GT's engine was improved to produce 315 horsepower at 6000 rpm. Traction and stability control systems were added to all models, along with new wheel sizes and new spring rates and dampers. The engines were revised again in 2011 to include a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6R80 6-speed automatic transmission. 2012 saw the introduction of the Mustang Boss 302. This model was powered by 444 horsepower and 380 lb. per ft. of torque.

The Sixth Generation: The sixth generation rolled out from 2013 to the present. A number of changes were introduced, including an extra 1.5 inches on the width of the body, a trapezoidal grille, an increased passenger capacity, and several new colors. Three engine options are available: a 300 horsepower 3.7 L V6, a 435 horsepower 5.0 L Coyote, and the newly available 310 horsepower 2.3 L EcoBoost with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. The new model also features a new independent rear suspension (IRS) system. In 2015 the sixth generation Mustang was awarded a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
