Ford F150 at Ford Lincoln of Huntington

Ford pick-ups have been on the road since 1948 and the F-Series has been the most popular vehicle in the U.S. for the past thirty years. No wonder it's such a best seller, not only is it tough and capable enough to withstand the heaviest jobs at work and at home, it is also a comfortable commuter with handsome styling and a good selection of trim levels.

F150 Bed Size

The F150 stands out in the league of full-size trucks because it not only gives impressive mileage, but it is also powerful and efficient. Known for its reliability on and off-road, the F150 has a choice of cab and bed sizes to suit every need and budget:

  • Regular: available with a 6.5 foot - or an 8-foot bed.
  • SuperCab: available with a 6.5 foot - or an 8-foot bed.
  • SuperCrew: available with a 6.5-foot bed or a 5.5-foot.

F150 Engine Options

The F150 engine options start with the base 3.5-liter V6 delivering 282 horsepower and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2.7-liter V6 produces 325 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque. The 5.0-liter V8 delivering 385 horsepower and 387 lb.-ft. of torque. At the top of the range is the 3.5-liter V6 which delivers 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque.

F150 drivers get reasonable fuel economy thanks to the EcoBoost V6 which delivers 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, which is one of the reasons F150 owners are happy to buy this truck again. When it comes to safety, the F150 has good ratings in both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests.

F150 Trim Levels

The F150 has six trim level options: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited. Standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, air-conditioning, automatic headlights, cloth upholstery, and a four-speaker stereo. Pre-wired trailer connections and trailer sway control are also standard. The F150 can be customized with leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, parking sensors and an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment center.

F150 Generations

First Generation: The F-series pickup was first introduced in 1948. Known as the Ford Bonus-Built, it was offered in a range of eight different weight ratings.

Second Generation: The second generation ran from 1953-1956 and had larger dimensions, boosted engines and an updated chassis.

Third Generation: The third generation came on the scene in 1957, with a redesign and significant modernization, which included integrated front fenders and a new-style bed.

Fourth Generation: From 1961-1966, the fourth generation F-series pickup stole the show. The new trucks sported and integrated cab and bed as well as upgraded suspension. In this generation the Ford Ranger also made its debut.

Fifth Generation: The fifth generation was introduced in 1967. Upgrades included increased dimensions, expanded engine options, and a more stylized trim.

Six Generation: 1973 saw the introduction of the sixth generation. Though it was built on the same platform as the fourth generation, it had a number of modernizations. These included front disc brakes, larger cabin size, improves heating and AC, and a galvanized steel double wall bed construction.

Seventh Generation: From 1980-1986, Ford's seventh generation had a completely new chassis and larger body, making it the first major redesign since 1965. With more fluid aerodynamics and better fuel economy, the truck was an immediate hit.

Eight Generation: In 1987, the eighth generation added a softening of the truck's body lines, which further improved aerodynamics. Other major improvement included custom trim, a five-speed manual overdrive transmission, and a re-designed interior.

Ninth Generation: The ninth generation was introduced in 1992. The F150 featured dual fuel tanks. The FlareSide bed returned as an option for this generation.

Tenth Generation: From 1997-2003, the F150 was now available with 3 engine sizes. In 1999 the two V8 Modulars also got power upgrades.

Eleventh Generation: Introduced in 2003, the eleventh generation was introduced with the new P2 platform. The trucks had a new, futuristic styling as well as new drivetrains and powertrains.

Twelfth Generation: The 2009 F150 featured a larger-scale interior. It also had a three-bar grille and option extra trim levels. The chassis was lighter weight than previous generations and the safety and fuel economy was also improved.

The F150 is now on its thirteenth generation, which was introduced in 2015 and though the dimensions of the truck remain the same, the body is made from aluminum rather than steel, reducing the weight by around 700lbs. The 12th F150 generation was manufactured between 2009 and 2014 and has most of the equipment and ability of the current generation.
