Customers looking to buy cars with a high fuel economy might just have won the jackpot with the 2020 Ford Explorer. The EPA ratings of the Explorer indicate that it is currently the most frugal of all its direct competitors in the large SUV segment.

Does the EPA rating differ with the two different trims?
There are two trims available of the Explorer 2020 – the base trim and the platinum trim.

When it comes to the base trim, it has been equipped with a 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine as well as a rear-wheel-wheel drive with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The EPA ratings of this trim check out at 21 miles per gallon in the city, 28 on the highway, and a combined score of 24.

When opting for the all-wheel-drive system, the EPA dips slightly coming in at 20 for the city, 27 for the highway, and a combined 23.

The platinum trim of the car is equipped with the relatively powerful twin-turbo V-6 3-liter engine. This engine consumes quite a bit of fuel as compared to the base trim, and so, the EPA numbers fall for this trim. It returns a rating of 18 in the city, 24 on the highway, and a combined specification of 20.

However, with the size and power of the platinum trims, it is still quite a fuel-efficient car.

What about the Hybrid Version?
The 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid packs in quite a punch with its power and frugality. The hybrid measures at about 27miles per gallon in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and a combined rating of about 28 mpg. However, this is only for the rear-wheel-drive models. When the all-wheel models are taken into account, the EPA ratings see a slight fall. This version of the model measures out at 23 mpg in the city, 26 on the highway, and a combined of 25 mpg. However, such fuel economy, coupled with the 3.3-liter V6 engine and 1.5-kilowatt-hour battery, is simply phenomenal.
